Annual Dues

Supporting our Commitment to Scouting

As of 2024, memberships in Scouting America and in the Troop are now managed through separate processes, explained below and online here.

  • Scouting America Membership. BSA Fees and NCAC Fees are now collected directly by Scouting America as part of the registration/renewal process. Membership in Scouting America, also known as BSA Registration, is valid for 12 months from date joined. Scouting America will send renewal notices to Scouts and Adults with expiring BSA Registrations 60 days in advance of the expiration date. Make sure to promptly renew your Scouting America membership; this is especially important for Scouts to ensure there are no gaps in their advancement.

  • Troop Membership. Troop 128's annual dues help cover the essential costs of running a successful Scouting program, including materials, awards, and activities that support our Scouts' growth. Troop membership runs from January 1 through December 31.

  • For current Scouts and Adult Volunteers in Troop 128, you will participate in the Troop’s annual rechartering process, which is when we renew each individual's membership in the Troop. We collect payment November 1-30 for the next calendar year. You must be current with your BSA and NCAC memberships in order to renew with the Troop.

  • For new/transfer Scouts and Adult Volunteers, you will pay your BSA and NCAC fees directly to each organization when you complete your BSA Registration. Then, you will pay a pro-rated amount for Troop dues. Families joining September - December will pay a pro-rate of this year’s dues as well as dues for the next calendar year.

Financial assistance is available by contacting the Scoutmaster, Treasurer, or Committee Chair.

Explanation of Fees

  • BSA Fee for Youth Members. The annual fee for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, and Crew participants is set at $85. This fee covers the costs of providing youth access to robust programs, camps, and resources that foster leadership, character development, and outdoor skills. If you are participating in multiple programs (for example, being registered in both Venturing and Scouts BSA), only one membership fee is required.

  • BSA Fee for Adult Leaders. The annual registration fee for adult volunteers, including leaders, committee members, and other key roles, is $65. This fee supports training, background checks, and the necessary resources for maintaining a safe and enriching Scouting environment. If you are participating in multiple programs (for example, a volunteer for the Girls’ Troop and Boys Troop or the Troop and the Pack), only one membership fee is required.

  • NCAC Fees. The National Capital Area Council (NCAC) has established an annual Council Participation Fee of $80 for all youth participating in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scouts programs. This fee helps cover the local costs of delivering a high-quality Scouting program.

  • BSA Scout Life Magazine (optional). When registering with the BSA, you will have the option to add an additional $15 per year if families choose to subscribe to the official youth magazine, providing fun, informative content tailored to Scouts' interests. We recommend one subscription per household.

  • Troop Dues. For the year 2026, Troop dues have been set at $175 for Youth and $0 for Adults (thank you volunteers!). These dues are critical in supporting the day-to-day activities and operations of the troop. Here's a breakdown of how the Troop Dues cover essential aspects of the Scouting experience:

    • BSA Charter Fees. Each Scouting unit (pack, troop, crew, or ship) pays a $100 annual charter fee, which supports the operational and administrative functions of local councils. Troop dues cover this cost.

    • Meeting Costs. Dues include funding for meeting activities supplies (i.e. our Iron Chef Competition) and administrative materials.

    • Badges and Awards: Dues cover the cost of merit badges, rank advancement patches, Eagle Scout kits, and other recognition items Scouts earn throughout the year. It also includes neckerchiefs, numeral patches, and other supplies for new Scouts.

    • Camping and Outing Support. A portion of the dues support the purchase and maintenance of Troop gear like tents, cooking equipment, and other necessary supplies for Troop outings, as well as reducing out-of-pocket costs for campouts and service projects.

    • Troop Events and Activities. Dues help subsidize special events, service projects, community outreach activities, and other Troop-led initiatives, making participation more affordable for all Scouts.

    • Operational Costs. Dues help cover miscellaneous expenses such as leader training, troop communications, banking fees, PayPal administrative fees, etc.

Note that there will be a small additional charge for each campout or outing, usually between $20-$30 per person to cover food and program/campsite fees for those who attend.
